Thin Client Computing

The personal computer led to a large scale decentralisation of IT resources and, coupled with the emergence and reliance upon the Internet as a business tool, the IT function has had to face many significant challenges and threats. Today, there is a growing movement in thinking that it is time to re-centralise IT resources and improve the management of human resources so that their focus is put 100% back into productivity.

How can this be achieved and what are the potential benefits?

Thin client computing is a combination of the following key components:

• The physical desktop device (often cheaper, smaller and quieter than a PC and consumes
  less power than a PC).
• The connection broker that allows terminal emulation and applications to be accessed on the physical desktop device. This can also give high levels of desktop mobility, simplified access for remote workers and “hot desking”.
• The back end server and storage infrastructure that allows clients to access applications.
• It can include such areas as telephony integration.

There are a growing number of thin clients on the market and terminal emulation packages to choose from.
